Empathy As Disruptive Innovation

May 7, 2017

Dr. Gokcigdem chaired and presented at a panel titled: “Empathy As Disruptive Innovation” at the AAM 2017 Annual Meeting in St. Louis. Co-presenters included: Jonathan Carfagno, Executive Director of Hickory Museum of Art; Dr. Emlyn Koster, Director of North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences; Adam Rozan, Director of Audience Engagement at Worcester Art Museum, and Ruth Shelly, Director of Portland Children’s Museum.

Abstract: Empathy, the ability to feel like another, is a catalyst for behavioral change. Understanding the conditions that foster empathy might be the disruptive innovation that inspires solutions to a range of local and global challenges. Museums can contribute to human socioemotional development that advances positive societal progress through experiential learning, narratives about shared humanity and our planet, and as forums for reflection and dialogue. Four museum representatives will examine the role of empathy as an institutional core value, as integral to the curatorial, design, and educational program development processes, and as an intentional outcome in behavioral change.
